Google's Atlantis Discovery Explained

Google Earth may have just found the Lost City of Atlantis.

The search tool has previously been used to discover uncharted areas of the world, including a forest in Mozambique and ancient remains of a Roman villa. But the latest edition of the program includes the ability to explore the ocean floor and now some have claimed that the ancient city of Atlantis has also been unearthed.

Geophysicist David Sandwell of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography helped Google in their quest to extend their maps of the ocean floor. The website used maps and data that Sandwell and Walter Smith of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration gathered by combining depth measurements recorded by ships and satellite readings of seafloor topography.

This new tool has got some thinking about the old legend of Atlantis.

The New York Times reported that British aeronautical engineer Bernie Bamford claimed he spotted what looks to be like a city block underneath the ocean off the west coast of Africa near one of Atlantis’ proposed locations. Google denied that the area is the utopian island that Plato once described, according CNet.

You can't deny me Atlantis! You can deny me the White House, but not made up places. Where's my pick axe?

Wow, I hadn't heard about this at all. Personally, I don't see how anyone would think that this would be true, but it's neat when new stuff comes up like this and creates a stir.

Good find!

Somebody along the line mistranslated Plato's notes on it. It's not 3 days journey, it's 3 months.

They say Antartica used to be a land continent before it migrated to the south pole.
I wonder whats beneath all that ice.

Camel bones. And the body of Superman. And soon to be polar bear bodies.

Actually, I heard that when all the continents were together, camels moved along that area. (Proven by fossils I'm guessing.)

Antarctic glaciers melting faster than thought
By ELIANE ENGELER, Associated Press – Wed Feb 25, 4:41 pm ET

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090225/ap_ ... _antarctic

GENEVA – Glaciers in Antarctica are melting faster and across a much wider area than previously thought, a development that threatens to raise sea levels worldwide and force millions of people to flee low-lying areas, scientists said Wednesday.

Researchers once believed that the melting was limited to the Antarctic Peninsula, a narrow tongue of land pointing toward South America. But satellite data and automated weather stations now indicate it is more widespread.

The melting "also extends all the way down to what is called west Antarctica," said Colin Summerhayes, executive director of the Britain-based Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research.

"That's unusual and unexpected," he told The Associated Press in an interview.

By the end of the century, the accelerated melting could cause sea levels to climb by 3 to 5 feet — levels substantially higher than predicted by a major scientific group just two years ago.

Making matters worse, scientists said, the ice shelves that hold the glaciers back from the sea are also weakening.

------------------------

So where ever the bears live, they will be running out of space soon. And If I go back to America I'll have to find a new place to live in.
