Pretty eye-opening lecture on how sugar (sucrose, fructose etc) is a poison and the primary agent in the weight gain of the modern global population.
Trying to drink coffee without sugar, but I think that new natural sweetner Truvia (stevia) doesnt have the drawbacks of sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, etc.

Sugar, Just Unhealthy or is it Toxic?!

Sugary and sweet! We certainly do love our sugar! From larger portion sizes everywhere in sodas and other treats as well as increases in sugar and high fructose corn syrup (also sugar), we are all consuming more than ever before! Why does it matter though? The New York Times shares some pretty alarming findings from Professor Robert H. Lustig, MD, a child specialist and expert in childhood obesity.

Lustig claims that our increase in sugar is the primary cause that Americas, as a whole, have been gaining more weight!

Robert H. Lustig, MD wrote:
Sugar is not just an empty calorie, he says; its effect on us is much more insidious. “It’s not about the calories,” he says. “It has nothing to do with the calories. It’s a poison by itself.”

The full lecture is available on youtube if you would like to hear what he has to say for himself. It is a bit technical but has some great insight on why sugar could really be the toxic ingredient in our family’s diet.

Now to what really matters. Do you believe it?! Does your family try to limit it’s sugar intake? Do you believe that sugar really could be the biggest factor to obesity in America, and if so, what do we do about it?! Share your thoughts below, I’d love to hear what your family is doing!

An interesting bit. Much of what I drink outside of water, tea, and milk is because it tastes good, even though I know it's unhealthy. I think I'll go ahead and slash my soda intake for a while and see what happens. On a side note, I've always thought of baby formula as garbage.

I know some people here are fans of that sweet stuff but I do feel the urge for food lessened by cutting down on the sugar. :?

Im weird, but I don't really like sugar/sweets, i told that to a woman here at work once and she called me 'unamerican'. Maybe its because I found out I had some pretty bad teeth around 10 years ago and I got scared away from it (drank alot of diet pepsi in the early years of ffxi), that or maybe I have some beginnings of diabetes since I really feel like crap if I eat alot of sweets.

However, being a parent I notice tons of sugar in drinks, it's ridiculous. For instance we don't give our kids alot of soda, since it's been labeled as 'bad' by the general public, we give them fruit juice. BUT good old ocean spray cranberry-apple juice has 32 grams of sugar per 8 ounces, while a 12 oz can of coke has 34 grams of sugar per 12 ounces >.> To put this in perspective, a super sweet kids cereal like reese's puffs chocolate and peanut butter only has 11 grams of sugar per serving.

I remember drinking alot of full sugar soda as a teen, my 4 person family would consume 2-3 12 packs of coke/dr pepper/etc. every two weeks, most through me and my sister. I virtually never drank tap water and milk was either on cereal or bathed in chocolate syrup. But that was normal back then.. my dad has type 2 diabetes now, as does my mother in law, it's very common. But that has nothing to do with sugar consumption, because the food industry says so, and they wouldn't lie to us of course.

I love stuff like that video, however americans are so wrapped up in denial that nothing short of death with concrete proof of the cause will ever change things, sort of like what happened with smoking.

Day, I pretty much agree with everything you said there. I have spent the past two years weening myself off of sugar. I used to drink nothing but soda, and eat sweets all the time. When I realized two years ago that that was the root of a lot of health issues I had, I switched to drinking nothing but water. In a few months time, I felt a lot healthier and I lost over 50 pounds. I pretty much stay away from any foods that have sugar in them, but I still give in and eat a bit of candy or chocolate once in a while. But I definitely can say that without a ton of sugar in my life, I feel infinitely better in pretty much every way possible.

Nothing wrong with indulging every now and then, but as stated, you will have problems down the line if you make it a daily event.

Also, glad to hear you're feeling much better nowadays, kitten. =D
